Spring Break, 2017
March 18 - 27
Highlights
LANGUAGE IMMERSION ı DIVERSITY ı SERVICE LEARNING
This trip is designed to provide students with a variety of sociocultural and linguistic experiences that will help them grow as critical thinkers. Through fully-immersive, authentic hands-on activities, students will be exposed to Spanish culture and language, in a setting that fosters learning by doing. Our ultimate goal is to bring the school's lessons and values to life through this educational journey, helping students to grow as global citizens on an unforgettable life-changing adventure.
Service Learning
United Nations Goals
Poly Prep students will engage in activities that are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These goals aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years. Poly Prep's trip to Spain will focus on the following goals during this trip:
- Gender Equality: Students will participate in workshops and activities on the topic of feminism and gender equality
- Sustainable Cities and Communities: Students will visit a Sustainable Organic Farm and engage in farm-to-table activities
Diversity
Flamenco Culture
Poly Prep's students will engage in interactive and fun activities that will provide insight into the culture of Flamenco music, listed on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. They will see Flamenco as the badge of identity of numerous communities and groups, in particular the Gitano (Roma) ethnic community, which has played an essential role in its development. Poly Prep students will learn how its transmission occurs through dynasties, families, social groups and Flamenco clubs, all of which play a key role in its preservation and dissemination.
Language Immersion
Local School Exchange
From the moment they arrive in Sevilla, Poly Prep students will be immersed in Spanish language and culture. There will not be any grammar classes during the trip; the students will learn by doing, by living authentic experiences in the target language. We will facilitate a pen pal match-ups with local students before the start of the trip. Then, they will meet their Spanish buddies in person when they visit their school and spend the day with them. Living with a local host family will too provide some unvaluable insight into Spanish cuture and way life, besides offering constant opportunities to practice the language.
