Highlights

We have planned a series of experiences that successfully integrate economic and ethnic diversity. Additionally, this tour delivers unique cultural and linguistic activities that will connect York Prep's students to local people and customs. Although developing foreign language skills takes the spotlight, most our activities are interdisciplinary; concepts of History, Latin, Art, Science and Social Studies are present throughout the trip.

Cultural Diversity

The different civilizations, that once occupied Spain, left a rich cultural legacy behind that makes this one of the most captivating countries in Europe. They will visit places that were models of multi-religious societies, such as Toledo or Sevilla. Being direct witnesses of the harmonious coexistence of different cultures will foster respect and appreciation for different backgrounds. Spanish multi-cultural heritage is also reflected on its gastronomy, as most traditional dishes are representative of the different peoples that once inhabited this country. They will learn how to make some of these dishes with our hands-on cooking workshops.

Service Learning

They will become familiar with models of successful ethical farming practices by visiting a sustainable organic farm, and taking part in hands-on activities led by local farmers. They will learn how farming can be practiced in a way that not only minimizes the negative impact on the environment and local populations, but even improves them. The will learn about positive ways in which humans and nature can interrelate through a variety of activities, all presented in an interactive, fun environment that promotes awareness and appreciation of the multiple values of forests.

Language Immersion

From the moment they arrive in Madrid, the students will be immersed in Spanish language and culture. There will not be any grammar classes during the trip; the students will learn by doing, by living authentic experiences in the target language. We will facilitate a pen pal match-ups with local students before the start of the trip. Then, they will meet their Spanish buddies in person when they visit their school and spend the day with them. Additionally, although our guides are bilingual, communication with them during excursions and activities will be mostly in Spanish.
