Nightingale's Spain Trip, 2017
Highlights
SERVICE LEARNING ı LANGUAGE IMMERSION ı CULTURAL DIVERSITY
This trip is designed to provide students with a variety of sociocultural and linguistic experiences that will help them grow as critical thinkers. Through fully-immersive, authentic hands-on activities, students will be exposed to Spanish culture and language, in a setting that fosters learning by doing. Our ultimate goal is to bring the school's lessons and values to life through this educational journey, helping students to grow as global citizens on an unforgettable life-changing adventure.
Service Learning
United Nations Goals
Given Nightingale's strong commitment to Service Learning, their students will engage in activities that are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These goals aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has specific targets to be achieved over the next 15 years. Nightingale trip to Spain will focus on the following goals during this trip:
- Gender Equality: Students will participate in workshops and seminars on the topic of feminism
- Affordable and Clean Energy: Students will visit Europe's Largest Wind Farm and learn about sustainable energy sources
- Sustainable Cities and Communities: Students will visit a Sustainable Organic Farm and engage in farm-to-table activities
- Life Below Water: Students will learn about protection of marine ecosystems on a whale-watching tour
Diversity
Tres Culturas Experience
The different civilizations, that once occupied Spain, left a rich cultural legacy behind that makes this one of the most captivating countries in Europe. We have prepared a series of activities and visits through which Nightingale students will become acquainted with the harmonious coexistence of different cultures, Muslim, Jewish and Christian. They will visit places that were models of multi-religious societies, such as Sevilla, Cordoba and Vejer.
Language Immersion
Local School Exchange
From the moment they arrive in Sevilla, Nightingale students will be immersed in Spanish language and culture. There will not be any grammar classes during the trip; the students will learn by doing, by living authentic experiences in the target language. We will facilitate a pen pal match-ups with local students before the start of the trip. Then, they will meet their Spanish buddies in person when they visit their school and spend the day with them. Living with a local host family will too provide some unvaluable insight into Spanish cuture and way life, besides offering constant opportunities to practice the language.
